Dashain: Nepal's Greatest Festival
Dashain, Nepal's most significant and longest festival, is a 15-day celebration that honors the triumph of good over evil. Rooted in Hindu mythology, it commemorates the goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura. The festival typically falls in September or October, aligning with the bright lunar fortnight of the month of Ashwin in the Nepali calendar.
Dashain is a time of family reunions, blessings, and elaborate rituals. It begins with Ghatasthapana, the sowing of jamara (barley seeds), and culminates on the tenth day, Vijaya Dashami, when elders apply tika (a mixture of rice, yogurt, and vermilion) to younger family members as a blessing. The festival also features the flying of kites, swinging on traditional bamboo swings, and feasting on delicious foods.
More than just a religious observance, Dashain embodies Nepal's cultural richness, fostering unity and reinforcing social bonds. It's a time when the entire nation comes alive with joy, symbolizing new beginnings and the eternal cycle of victory of righteousness.
