Holidays and Festivals Dates for Kartik 2082
Tihar: The Festival of Lights
Tihar, also known as Deepawali or the Festival of Lights, is a five-day celebration that illuminates Nepal with joy and reverence. This vibrant festival typically falls in October or November, following Dashain in the Nepali calendar. Tihar is unique in its worship of not just deities, but also animals and familial bonds, reflecting the deep interconnectedness of all life in Nepali culture.
Each day of Tihar has its significance: Kaag Tihar honors crows, Kukur Tihar celebrates dogs, Gai Tihar and Laxmi Puja worship cows and the goddess of wealth, Gobardhan Puja reveres oxen, and the final day, Bhai Tika, strengthens the bond between brothers and sisters. Houses are adorned with oil lamps and candles, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of light across the country.
Tihar is not just a religious observance but a cultural phenomenon that brings communities together. It's marked by the exchange of gifts, the singing of Deusi and Bhailo (traditional songs), and the creation of beautiful Rangoli designs. This festival beautifully encapsulates Nepal's rich traditions, its harmony with nature, and the warmth of its people.
